Whatever you do - do NOT EVER use bronzer to contour!! It does not give the shadow effect you want for a contour and jordan liberty does a good YouTube video of exactly why you should not use it to contour

Batalash on youtube is amazing check out her video she shows you how to contour with cream and powder and the pros and cons of each!

For a beginner, I would suggest a taupe pressed powder eyeshadow. You apply this color with a very light hand to the areas of your face you want to recede, for example under your cheekbones. It's harder to get it wrong with powders. Just remember that you don't want it to look like you have a beard, so don't bring it in towards your mouth too much. Also, since you're a beginner, I would advise against contouring your nose. It can look dirty very easily. You can also highlight, and you can choose between a shimmery or a matte product. Liquid will probably look the most natural. I like Benefit High Beam and I LIGHTLY dab some on the tops of my cheekbones, inner eye corners and cupid's bow. Here's an example on how I contour.

Oh and my cheeks naturally go in a bit under my cheekbones so I really didn't do much. Here's the same cheek without makeup.
