So is henna suppose to be less drying to your hair than using commercial dyes? Anyone with dark brown use use henna to dye their hair and have good results? I am trying to get my hair back to the color in this photo, but I want to go a less damaging route.

My nan has been using henna since she was 10. She's like a million years old now and her hair is silky and soft still.

My nan is from Somalia so she still believes in her roots. She won't use any cosmetics other than what she used as a little girl lol. I adore my nan.

Trust me if you got that result with henna then keep at it. Henna is all natural and has no chemicals.

I was under the impression that a henna dye would make your hair a dark natural color?I could be wrong as I have no experience with henna dyes at all

No. Natural henna is a orange/ red depending on how long you leave it in for.

:) thank you hibz I appreciate that I always thought it was a brown with reddish undertones

My Nan's hair always turns out red. But she uses the homemade henna. So it might just be different products then.

There are several different colours of henna you can get. I know lush sells some awesome ones with softening butters in them. henna is a little messy, but so worth the colour pay off. you need lots of time, a place to get messy and a shower cap. the are a whole range of colours you can choose from at Sally's or any natural food mart. henna comes in shades such as; black-indigo, mahogany, brown, cherry-brown, red, orange and there is even a blond type out there.. although this one is Hardee to find and debatable as to if it is really henna.. its henna type. you can't lighten your hair with henna. it deposits colour. it is very rich and warm in colour. it will condition your hair to soft and shiny. any light hairs will look highlighted.. best of luck!

Oh, just a warning... if you use henna, you will not be able to strip the colour out. you can not dye or lighten after you use henna. hair colouring professionals will not process your hair.. you will have to grow it out.. I have lightened it after, I fried my hair, had to cut it off and start over.. that was a long time ago ;-)

I have thick black hair and I like it that way. but yes, before my hair treatment I used to apply henna once in a month. bcz my hair is so black, it gives a wonderful shine but not much color! I will share what I used to do while making the paste. I will take some loose tea leaves and boil them in water and then make the henna paste with the water. this will brighten up the the orangy-red color of the henna. I will also add 2-3 spoons of coconut oil in order to make the paste less drying. also, after washing the paste off, I will apply coconut oil in my hair, keep it overnight and wash it off the day after with my shampoo. and then the result is such shiny, slightly colored hair :) soo...I followed this regiment n it really worked for me...

I've seen my work colleague do this and it gives a totally different outcome than other hair dyes. It's natural, beautiful and even when it fades it still looks healthy and nice :)

Don't use it. You won't be able to achieve the pretty red tones from your pic. Most of the time it just gives your hair an orangy tint. Like how a faded red looks after the beautiful color has washed out and your left with orange hair
