Hm..from past experience of doing them professionally and having a few done on myself they almost never come out the way you hope or are imagining. Not to mention the damage it can cause to your hair...I had an incident where the solution was left in too long and my hair was literally like a cotton candy/ hay type of texture after and I had to cut off like 6-8 inches. That's pretty extreme of course, but it happens lol so just be careful. All that being said, I do like the look of them and don't think they are necessarily outdated...just not something I'd ever do again but I say go for it if that's what you really like! Good luck!!

Definitely. spiral if you going for a perm. the regular perm looks like a shaggy mop with very little definition to the curl. and maybe a bit '80s style...

@Allison, I have had perms before and yes they definitely didn't look like Shakira...but I do have naturally wavy hair, but it is wavy in areas and straight in other areas...I mainly just want to get it all uniformed.

If done right it's pretty. You know you can always go get a temporary set to see if you like it, then you can shampoo it out a couple days later. Lots of girls do that for weddings and photoshoots and stuff because they don't want to commit to a perm. We're doing them in school right now.

And if you want them loose or really tight don't be scared to speak up and be specific! Let them know exactly what you're looking for, show a pic on yohr phone, etc. They can't give you exactly what you want if you don't tell them, and a perm is definitely something you want to be specific about.
