I used to have that same problem - whenever I would go to bite them, I would think (get ready, this is kind of cheesy) "I love long beautiful nails more than the feeling I get when biting them"
I would also go into the habit of painting them FREQUENTLY so I would have beautiful nails all the time & wouldn't want to ruin them.

i used to have a habit of pulling all the nail polish off and then one day someone told me that I had the worst nails they had ever seen! Rude person, but it bothered me that someone noticed my nails! Anyway, from that moment on, I don't leave the house without having really perfect home manicured nails. And it's been two years. Anytime I think of pulling off the polish, I think of that rude girl!
That rude comment may have been the best thing someone ever said to me. hahah

I used to have terrible nails that I bit all the time, it was something I struggled with for a long time trying to quit with that bitter stuff you put on them and what not. Then one day, I just decided, "I want nice nails." And tadaa! It's all in the mindset, in my opinion. Mind over matter, eyes on the prize! Obviously it won't be instant, but in the meantime, you could maybe start reading more, or doing something that will busy your hands to distract you from biting your nails.
Good luck!!

i used to be the worst nail biter too! i stopped about 2 years ago and the way i stopped was painting my nails, and in the beginning it was putting really really thick coats on so it was blantantly apparent that i had something on. and i mean like 5 or 6 coats sometime, which never looks good but i needed to be able to feel it. so this may sound gross but in order to bite my nails i had to bite thru insane amounts of nail polish too. so the taste and the texture eventually made me stop

I went through a really stressful time sort of recently, and was biting my nails off, chewing the cuticles, it was GROSS. This is what's working for me.
Drink LOTS of water, like 3-4 litres a day if you can.
Keep hands and nails scrupulously clean; bacteria can get under and inbetween the layers of the nail and cause an infection.
Take 5000 to 7500 mcg (that's micrograms) biotin, or eat foods high in vitamin B7 - egg yolks, cheese, sunflower seeds, green vegetables.
I use a nail oil religiously now to stop picking at my cuticles. CND Solar Oil is my favorite.
Use a good nail strengthener; I like Nailtiques #2; if you use it, follow the directions, they're really specific about how it's applied.
My nails have really bounced back - I have to cut them back every week, they grow SO fast. Added bonus: my hair and skin look better too.
