I started off buying a Kryolan kit...fabulous! I love using Graftobian foundation palettes & added them to my kit recently
A lot of time & money can go into building a kit but this video by Goss MUA may give you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adALGRAEN3s

I would say take ur time bulding up ur kit because as u go along u find more product to buy, so don't invest all ur money in a single brand...
try something from here and bit of there, I like NYX because they are inexpensive, but having some high end brands is really worth it like MAC, BTW starsmakeuphaven have some dupes for MAC's eyeshadows and they really are hella nice eyeshadows.
Try to go for 3 different foundation colors from very pale to dark( just make sure U can play with the foundation undertones), that way U can mix and match colors.
Always have a spatula and a palette to mix things up.
I think from there on just have different palettes to get ur clients desired looks.
Oh one last thing the 1120 palettes some of them tend to be a bit chalcky and if you over blend colors on this palettes they look muddy.
Hope that helps a bit :)
