When I dyed my hair red I had to redye my hair almost every 2 weeks. I would use ammonia free non-permanant hair dye, the kind that comes out about 30 washes. that was the thing I hated about red was the up keep.
you can also try washing you hair less and using a dry shampoo in between washes.

No, I know how you fell. I had to go back to blond because the red was so much up keep, wish it weren't.

gah i want to go bright red soon this is is discouraging AAAAAAGH!
i was thinking of using manic panic, since you can keep it for awhile after you open it. & since i was only going to do part of it red (keeping the underneath black) & figured it'd last a bit longer. but every two weeks :\ i'm not sure.
(totally not frustrated with you ladies. (: the girls i work with thought it was an awful idea & now i want to do it even more. it frustrated me they didn't like it though. haha.)

My natural hair color is a dark brown with warm undertones. About 5 months ago I went red. The exact color is I use is an Ion color in 6IR-66.66. (dark intense red blonde). And although I immediately loved the color, I hated that in less than a month I was ready for another color (root to tip) to brighten it up. I shampoo only once a week with a sulfate free color safe shampoo and I protect my hair if I'm going to be out in the sun. My daughter did some searching on line and suggested I use Tressa Watercolors shampoo. It's a tinted, gel like shampoo that you leave on for about 3-4 minutes. I always follow with a conditioner for red hair I found at Ulta (their brand). Since then, I only have to touch up the new growth since the rest of my hair has stayed vibrant. The shampoo takes some getting used to, I don't get loads of lather from it, and it does stain my finger nail polish. But I love how it is maintaining my red hair...won't use anything else.

After you dye your hair next time, try rinsing with apple cider vinegar. It helps to close the cuticle that's opened when you put developer on your hair and keeps your hair color from slipping away. =) I add a few tablespoons to my shampoo, too.
