I love L'OREAL smoothing primer too, mainly to matte the face and conceal pores. Loving Sephora smoothing primer too, it is a cheaper alternative to SmashBox which is of course better.

I like the Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse (: It's in the middle range for price since it's not 12 dollars.. but it's not 50 either. It's 35.. I've tried the body shop face primer, and that's a pretty good cheaper alternative ^__^

I use Nars and UD. I have tried Smashbox and did not like it. Nars was good for winter, but UD seems to be working great for spring and summer.

I could not live without foundation primer! It just makes everything go on so much smoother and wear SO much better. I think that Smashbox Photofinish is the best, but it's also pretty expensive. I have a really hard time justifying the cost to be honest. I've gotten hooked on the new primer from L'Oreal. It's from the drugstore and really affordable. It's not quite as great as Smashbox, but for the price it's absolutely great.

With the L'Oreal primer, you're getting LESS product for your money -- 1/2 oz compared to the standard 1 oz. And it comes in a jar instead of a pump bottle or a tube.
Smashbox Photofinish (regular) = $32 for 1 oz (tube), $49 for 2 oz (tube; $24.50/oz)
Smashbox Photofinish Light = $36 for 1 oz (original pump packaging only); $49 for 2 oz (tube; $24.50/oz)
L'Oreal Studio Secrets primer = roughly $11 for 1/2 oz, or ***$22/oz.***
To give some perspective, Clinique's Redness Solutions Daily Protective Base costs less per ounce *as well as* overall than L'Oreal's per ounce (Clinique's costs $18.50 at Sephora for a 1.35 oz tube, or about $13.70/oz). Or, you can buy LORAC's aquaPRIME Oil Free Makeup Primer for $31 for a 1.35 oz tube, which works out to almost $23/oz - just $1 more than L'Oreal.
If you want to save money, a decent dupe for Smashbox Photofinish Light is Hard Candy's primer ($8 at Walmart for 1.6 oz tube = $5/oz).
