Lighting for makeup?

A lot of people on youtube use more than the ceiling light for their videos. And I know that even just for taking photos, a lot of us here use spotlights, fluorescent lights etc...
I really need to get one, but I don't have the first clue as to what to get :/ what do fluorescent lights do? What lights are best to use? Help!

I use a daylight bulb to take photos because the color ends up a bit more true (though not perfect because other things come in to play), but I see a lot of other bloggers and vloggers using daylight bulbs, flourescents, True Color, etc.
