Is it beneficial to go to a makeup show to buy products if you already have pro discounts? are the discounts more at these makeup shows?

I was just at IMATS in Vancouver, B.C and sadly I wasn't impressed. I have heard though that the Vancouver one is different than the other bigger IMATS around the world. This one had no pro only hours or any extra pro discounts. All the discounts were exactly the same as the ones I normally get. I felt it wasn't worth all the crowds and hardly being able to see anything or touch anything either. But that is just my opinion :) I mainly went to the show to be able to actually touch the products and see what the colors look like in person, since where I live I don't have access to a store like Sephora to be able to swatch things. I have to order all of my products for my kit online. I hope this was somewhat helpful :)

IMATS Vancouver is nothing like IMATS LA or NY.
The benefits of going to a trade show is the networking. Many companies do offer free items or exclusive items not sold online or in stores at trade shows. In many cases you get to meet the owners of the companies or their public reps.
That said, the discounts at most trade shows are equal to and sometimes less than pro prices so if you're traveling from out of the area it may not be worth it if you already get a pro discount.

I have a vested interest in this answer as I am the Director of Education and Artist Relations for The Makeup Show but I have found that the biggest benefit of the show is not solely the shopping. The discounts at The Makeup Show offered by brands can be 40%, 50% or more but it is the interaction that you want. The people working inside the booths at the show are not retail artists but they are the brand founders, hiring executives, pro relations people and international artists you want to meet. There is also education at all of the shows and the meet and greet opportunities that come with an interaction with agents, celebrity artists and editors is invaluable.

Like James, I too have a vested interest in this because I am a vendor at shows like The Makeup Show, IMATS, and others. The discounts we offer at tradeshows are higher than the professional discounts in our Frends With Benefits program. I cannot speak for other vendors but knowing many of them personally on a friendly basis...most do offer their largest discounts at the shows.
In addition to the discounts, I have to echo James' sentiments. The networking opportunities are endless, as are the educational opportunities. This is an industry, like many others, where WHO you know can be as important as what you know. And there are no better opportunities to meet the right people than at industry trade shows. Show up dressed well, with your makeup done well, and bring lots of business cards.
Oh...and money...and come shop at my booth. =)
PS: See you at TMS Orlando!

I wouldn't go to the show solely for shopping. That can be done on your own time at home over the internet. However, what's priceless is the education you get from the show and the people you meet in the industry. I hope you do consider going because it can benefit your business more than just purchasing products with discounted price.
