I'm debating on getting it but I'm trying to figure out if it's really that much better then drug store gel liner.

I would get physicians formula gel liner it's the best I've used it goes on smooth and easily

I havent tried it but I can guarantee you the tarte gel eyeliner I use it all the time its smooth comes with a double ended brush and lasts all day.
