So I want to go in for highlights for the summer. but I want to make sure I am asking for what I want. what are the different kinds of hair highlights to choose from?

I would take a picture of what you want. You know what they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words". Even if you choose the proper terminology of what you want, doesn't mean the hairdresser is going to necessarily have the same definition of what you ask for.
