I have tape in hair extensions and recently they've been knotting up and looking dull. Some of my pieces are probably past their due date but I needed them for some length (will probably take them out and replace for next time) but what can I do to help them now. I've been using hair masks and treatments but it seems to be making it worse!

What type if hair is it and are you using heat?

Jenna L.
It's human hair. Babe extensions.
Yes I use heat. I curl them and blow dry them lightly.

Try laying off the heat for awhile.

Well doing that isn't really going to repair them. Since it's not hair growing my from scalp it isn't going to get any of the oils from my hair that help repair damage. Looking more for products.

Are you using a thermal protector? I also use proclaim hair oil on mine when I straighten them. It adds shine and an extra layer of protection

I find anything I use other than an oil just makes them knot up!!

I had problems with my extensions being tangled too. I ALWAYS slept with it in a braid or a bun so they wouldn't matte up while I'm sleeping, and always careful when I'm lying down and even driving. If I wasn't they were like dread locks!

Oh and I wouldn't put too much product in them either. Maybe a mask once in a while but other than that I find it makes them heavy feeling

This is exactly why I only use clip ins, I've only heard negative things about tape, and honestly I don't see the appeal in anything "taped" to my head lol. I feel for you doll, depending on the quality of the hair you'll have to just stick it out or remove them. :(

Try a serum, it will keep the cuticles closed and smooth.

Oh I always sleep with them in a braid! I think maybe my longer pieces are just more fried and I need to ditch them. Personally tape ins are 1000x better than clip ins. So much less pulling and you can hardly tell they're there. But yeah maybe using a lighter mask will help me!

I've been using extensions for the last 4-5 years, and my experience is that you can never get the hair in better condition, you can only maintain it. When my hair is starting to become dull or dry, I usually rub in a big amount of hair oil (I use bio silk) as a last resort until I can replace them or cut them. Try cutting if a half inch or so, my extensions look way more healthy and bouncy after I do that, and then I am good to go for another month or so.
