I think the dark purples/red things seems so 90s. I remember all those ads only showcasing those colours on black women. I think you can wear ANY shade of lipstick you choose. I am a dark woman (NW47) and I wear pastels, bold colours, and plums and red.

It can be a little bit 90s if its too dark but I think those kind of colours just a bit more vibrant. Just thought as she said she didn't want to look to crazy it would be a nice thing to try to start with. I agree you can wear most bright colours really. I'd say you have more options than white girls do really because the colours just seem to show up nicely and there doesn't seem to be such a problem with it not suiting your skin tone x
