Hey so for my prom if really love to do a beautiful, elegant updo but my hair is about an inch above my shoulders and layered. I can't even put it in a pony without half of it falling out. Is there any hope for me at all? I really hope you guys have some ideas!

Please keep in mind that I'm a complete hair newbie... I don't know how to fishtail braid, let alone make a bun. It's sad, I know.

Yes, there is hope, you just need bobby pins. I think you should curl your hair. It will give body to your hair. Pin the curls that can't reach your bun up to look like they are heading in that direction and then the rest of it twist the curls and pin them up to look like a bun :)
I hope this works for you

Did see your second message but shouldn't be bad. All it is, is curling your hair and using bobby pins to put it up :)

You could book an appointment at the salon and let them do your prom updo! :D that's what I've always done. Just find a photo of what you want it to look like and with bobby pins and hairspray they will make it happen!

Incorporate a French braid! You can do those on any length of hair and it'll spice it up. (:
