I personally do not recommend toothpaste as it yields no benefits other than irritation and the possibility of contributing to more breakouts. Toothpaste generally contains lots of irritating ingredients and fragrances which is what you want to avoid when treating acne.
Try applying neosporin on the zit, this will help them decrease significantly in size and reduce redness. I use sulfur mixed with vaseline to treat my own blemishes ( and to treat cystic acne. )
You can also try a combination of diluted tea tree oil which is similar to Benzoyl Peroxide or a tomato mask as tomatoes usually contain a good amount of salicylic acid.

You can crush up aspirin and make a paste with water it works like a spot treatment! The aspirin helps a lot with the redness too!

Since acne is technically a bacterial infection, using an antibiotic like neosporin will help with size and inflammation.

I would do blemish pads!! I have 2 different ones that I always reccommend and they are amazing! The pads are something you can always add to your daily routine and you will see a big difference.

I use toothpaste overnight n it works for me. Hasn't burned me or anything. Clean and clear has good products too. Be sure to drink plenty of water

In order to treat, I personally use Salicylic acid, tea tree oil, and Benzoyl Peroxide to treat the bacterial causes of acne. After that, you can treat acne as you would any other kind of inflammation to help deal with the redness and swelling. I'll hold an ice cube over my face or put on aloe vera. The most important thing is to be gentle. Rubbing, scratching, and getting angry at your face will only make it angry with you too.
