I really want to be an artist. Makeup and FX. I plan on going to cinema makeup school when I'm 18, but what can I do until then? I really, really enjoy it. I want to grow my skills and my school has a vocational school for cosmetology, however it mostly (90%) focuses on hair and nails. And as it's honestly not that nice of a school, I'm not that interested. What can I do? Please respond.

Just keep on practicing.
YouTube can help but you have to have a good makeup artist. There are a lot of people on YouTube that do things wrong.

I'm also an aspiring makeup artist and practice is a big key to getting better and trying new things.

I am practically in the same place as you! I totally agree wtih Shannon B. in that practice is key. Do makeup as much as you can and learn as many tips as you can. Since I can't get a formal job at a makeup store or counter, I like to do other people's makeup. Whenever there is a big dance at my school, I will do the makeup of like five of my friends. I also often do family members. Whenever you do makeup and are particularly proud of it, take high quality photos! To get into schools and get jobs, you need a portfolio. Hope this helped, good luck!

I'm in a votech school no matter how bad it seems I suggest doing it. You gain connections that would take years to get otherwise. I get to go to trade shows, practice on other people and build my skills in all areas. Also having a license tends to be more trust worthy than just being a random person. My school focuses mainly on hair and I want to go into skincare and makeup, but the experience I am getting is worth it and who knows maybe you will change your mind and at least you will have more opportunities being a general cosmetologist.

We have a salon nearby that offers lessons and the owner did pirates of the Caribbean makeup. I'm looking into that, but I toured the vocational school (shadowed a student and all) and was not impressed. Plus I'm past the application deadline lol.
