How to curl thick hair?

Hi I have very thick hair and my curls won't stay in or come out as I want them too! I also have trouble making the curls look even on both sides! Help!

What I do is gather smaller sections of hair. It helps a whole lot!

In addition to curling in smaller sections, when I remove the curl from the heat, I hold the curl scrunched up till it cools so that is maintains its shape & I spray with a lightweight, stronghold hairspray. I hope this helped!
