I've been interested in other school's dress codes and your opinion on it. So can you tell me what your school's restrictions are and how you feel about it? I'll go first.

Dress code:
Shorts have to be longer than finger tips
Tank top straps have to be 2 fingers wide
Can't show stomach, midriffs or back
Can't show undergarments

Opinion:
I think it's pretty stupid. Can you stop sexualizing clothing? My school cares more about the length of our shorts than the quality of education. Nothing wrong with stomachs, legs or shoulders right? They're not distracting. I understand the undergarments one and crop tops but I think anything longer than your belly button shouldn't be considered a crop top. And thumbs length would be better for shorts.

Your turn ladies, voice your opinion! Please don't fight, it's a debate, and we accept all opinions as long as they're respectful :)

I go to a really open and multicultural school so we don't have a dress code. You can wear anything! Tank tops, dresses, short shorts, skirts, crop tops, they don't care if your bra strap shows. As long as your nipples and ass cheeks are covered they honesty don't say anything!

Lucky, at my school the dress code is that shorts have to be two inches or lower from the tips of your knees and that shirts have to cover your shoulders, LIKE WHO CARES ABOUT SHOULDERS, I hate it, plus I'm fairly tall and it's hard to find dresses and skirts that ARNT in dress code

Well I'm not in school anymore lol but I believe our dress code was no spaghetti straps, shorts longer than fingertips, no undergarments showing. I personally do think it's reasonable. It IS distracting, do you know how many dudes hormones are raging in school?! Lol. The no spaghetti straps thing is stupid to me lol but I don't see a lot of them as unnecessary. Girls would wear short shorts anyways and they hardly ever enforced the dress code rules tbh that I remember lol. I really don't care what anyone is wearing and rules are meant to be broken, but it honestly is distracting lolllll.

I agree with Renay though, it is distracting

Personally I don't think it's the girls job to make sure the guys aren't distracted. Why don't they teach guys how to focus on something other than boobs? We shouldn't be responsible for something we can't control, aka their hormones.

At my old school the dress code was pretty much the same which sucked really bad for me especially on summer because I'm tall and when I tried to wear shorts I got in trouble because my legs are too long and my friends who are average could wear them and not get in trouble. It's pretty unfair if you ask me. I also love wearing crop tops so it really sucks that I don't have the freedom to do that either. I agree that schools need to stop sexualizing clothes and focus on the education.

Another rule was not too much cleavage showing as well. Sadly, females bodies ARE over sexualized. It's just the sad truth. But like I said they didn't even enforce the rules 95% of the time lol.

Mmmm I have a two sided opinion on this. Yes about the sexualizing clothes part. Usually these dress codes are stricter when it gets hot out and it's hard to dress within rules and still not sweat your whole body off by the end of the day. Guys should be taught to control themselves rather than restrict what we wear yeah. Also for me with short arms my definition of arms length is a lot different than others so that rule is kinda iffy. The back and shoulder one is literally stupid because who's going to go staring at your back the whole day? NOBODY gosh this makes me angry. I wear my favorite strapless dress and my mom screamed at me to change it because she thought I'd get sent home. Instead of trying to change girls and how they express themselves, help strengthen education.

Although from personal experience, I've told this on a lot of threads, but there are girls at my school that have their ass hanging out of their shorts. They wear practically sports bras to school (that's how short their shirts are) and the most revealing necklines you can imagine and a lot of them aren't even mature yet so they wear multiple push up bras. This is where I draw the line between defending the rule. They are asking for attention, it is distracting. Not only for horny guys but to everyone. You are putting your body up for grabs. And they are 14-15 years old. People define them as sluts all the time and their defense is to say clothes don't define who you are and I agree with that but there's a difference in how you look to people. Aaaah sorry it just irks me. Rant over :)

I agree with Katherine.

I think that the cleavage rule should be followed though. I don't understand why some girls always show off their boobs anyways.. I have big boobs and I'd prefer to keep them covered.

My school doesn't have a dress code. My only opinion on it is that a lot of girls wear thong sized shorts to school (I'm not even kidding o.o) which is something I don't want to see but it's their body and they can wear whatever they want! I admire their confidence for being able to wear it and not worry how they look. When I was in middle school the dress code was the same as yours and I didn't really care. I personally don't wear tank tops, crop tops, leggings, or shorts so I didn't have to worry about being dress coded and I didn't really form an opinion on it since it didn't affect what I wore but I know a lot of girls who hated it! I do agree people should stop over sexualizing everything.

@Leslie N. I completely agree with what you stated. I mean freedom is one thing, but you really shouldn't abuse your right to wear whatever and just come to school almost naked. It is a place for learning after all.

Completely agree Leslie

At my school we aren't allowed open-toed shoes (flip-flops), crop tops, shorts shorter than fingertip length, tank tops (not even thick ones). The thing that sucks is that they do enforce these rules. I do agree with what Renay said about guys. Guys can't help it but we shouldn't encourage it. What's actually wrong with wearing a cute T-shirt versus wearing a tank top that has your boobs hanging out if it?

Jul 18, 2014

Rissa G.

Katherine you're right, but that's not going to happen. Lol. We SHOULDNT be held accountable, but it's been that way for a loooooong time and in the real world women are overly sexualized as is. Sex sells. Showing skin, sells. Its unfortunately not going to change for quite some time. Do I agree with that? Hell no. It's the truth, though.

Jul 18, 2014

Katherine L.

@Renay T. I find that really sad. Nowadays they're all about equality but with this kind of slut shaming... And its not even actual slut shaming. They're controlling what we wear. That's not right, never will be right and never was right. This really sucks.

Jul 18, 2014

Olivia A.

Similar to what Leslie was saying...I think it's fine to wear what you want. It's your body but if you are doing it for attention...that's not good.

Jul 18, 2014

Rissa G.

Katherine, yes it is indeed sad. Equality is a big thing now, but honestly the "feminists" of today are just acting out and calling it feminism, but what feminism really is is the right to equality(politically wise, rights, etc) not the act of acting like a crazy women, showing some skin, and blah blah. I mean power to them as well, but I wish they would actually FIGHT and speak out for women's rights. Anyways that's a whole other topic lol. It isn't right, but we live in a pretty one sided society and the dominant side is the men. Slut shaming, body shaming, etc. I don't see it just vanishing ever. Which I agree, does suck.

Jul 18, 2014

Olivia A.

Renay! I agree with you so much! Another thing is that there are some things that if I guy does them...everyone is happy and praising him. If a girl does the same thing...she gets it trouble.
I had a perfect example of this a while ago but I don't remember it.

I love these debates! We should have them way more often!!

Jul 18, 2014

Rissa G.

Yes, Olivia. I agree. Just yesterday I saw an article of two couples who had sex in a club parking lot and what happen? The girls got called out and slut shamed, even the ARTICLES stated "two women wearing skimpy clothes caught having sex in public" or something along the time. I was like SERIOUSLY? What about the men involved?! Ugh. It's stupid. I don't agree with what happen, but why are only the women being mentioned? Ugh this is a whole other topic but it gets me so mad.

Your school rules are ok.
We have a uniform.
1. We have to wear skirts that are length like knees. I don't know how explain.
2. We can wear only formal pants from wool in winter. No jeans or other pants.
3. We have to wear blazers.
4. Blouses have to cover shoulders and have a small neck line. Also don't know how explain that correctly
5. No boots that are as high as knees.
6. No colorful tights.

My high school is one of the best in country and they are like that. I don't mind that much but I am sad that we can't wear jeans :/

In my school they have a dress code but everyone just wears what they want but I kind of wish that the girls would not be able to wear booty shorts because I personally think its inappropriate for someone's butt to be hanging out of there shorts and then wearing low waisted pants and a short crop top but I think if there wearing like high waisted shorts or pants and a crop top it's fine but when literally there entire stomach is showing its kind of taking it too far

And honestly I wish my school had uniforms because then we wouldn't have to worry about what clothing we would have to wear every day plus my school is in the more wealthy side of my town but I'm not extremely wealthy so I don't have 50 different name brand outfits that I can wear
And it would give me more time in the morning to do hair and makeup

And I agree with Leslie

And the whole shoulder thing is kind of stupid because who's going to be like

" ooh that's one fine shoulder you got there"

Pretty much know one
