I thought the same thing when I wanted to dye my hair blonde they said I had to bleach I was scared but what it did to my hair was damage it but I maintained it by puting coconut oil on my hair 3 times a week works great

If your hair isn't in the most "brilliant condition" I would honestly go to a salon so you won't risk melting your hair off. I don't know your reasons for avoiding salons but if you are scared/had an horrible salon experience before, I would do my research before going to any stylist.
Also, if your hair is black, it may take many applications of lightener to achieve the color you are going for. I don't ever recommend doing that in one go if your hair is already damaged.

Please don't bleach your hair at home go to a salon...bleaching has to be done correctly if not the color will be horrible and your hair will be even more damaged...especially considering the face you've been coloring your hair dark for the past 6 years. Just remember going light will be a longer process but worth it so definitely go to a salon.

Because you have a heavy buildup of dark pigment, it would be advisable to go to a salon. They can tell if your hair is strong enough and recommend a timeline for lightening. They likely will use a soap cap (bleach and shampoo) first to try and remove some of the black.
