You use a donut by putting your hair in a ponytail and then putting the donut around it and wrap the hair around it and secure the hair :)

I usually start with a ponytail thats not completely pulled out and then kinda mess the flopped bun around until i have a sturdier messy ball bun if that made any sense.

And for a donut bun i use an old tube sock thats already rolled up and then roll my hair into it and then secure it with bobby pins

I just pull my hair up into a pony, usually fairly high on the crown. Then I use a teasing brush (not a comb) on the pony is sections. Then I kind of roll it into a bun around the base. Using a teasing brush (I got mine at Sally's) instead of a comb gives me just enough volume without making a horrible, tangled mess when I take it out.
