I usually do it based on what I like, not others, but mine is usually nothing too crazy and very neutral.

In my experience, it is possible to make most colors work together, but if you're just starting out I do recommend neutrals, so that you can work on your skills and application before you move on to brighter shades =)

The easiest way is to get the same kind of colors, but have 1 light color, 1 medium, 1 dark, and if you want 1 really dark one. Also if you do a neutral eye, like just browns and then add 1 colorful color like blue or purple, it should work too. Makeup geek has a great video on this!! She uses examples with different colors too :)

^ I agree with Gabby. you should try eyeshadow quad-like palettes that chooses the color combo for you.

I recommend neutrals. Always start off with a primer & I always apply a base because it makes the eyeshadow colors pop more (: then for an all over lid shade ill apply a gold or champagne color. In the crease I apply a matte brown shade and I usually place a darker brown matte shade in the outer v and blend like crazy!
