You should really see your doctor.

Considerable hair loss or thinning of the hair is often a symptom of an underlying health issue, such as one's thyroid function or a vitamin deficiency, for example. I'd see my physician for a simple blood panel.
Meanwhile, I'd avoid heat, use a Wet Brush and bump up my Iron, B12, Omega3 and Vitamin C in my diet. Good luck, hun.

It could be something, so I wouldn't worry. Just be really gentle with your hair right now. You can pick up some dry shampoo so you aren't fussing with loss during washings right now. If it is breakage, a great hair mask will help. I'd just see the doc to be sure you're oke doke.

Please see a doctor.. The reason could be anaemia or any other deficiency.. I went thru the same incident as you described.. What I had was telogen effluvium which takes in which it takes 3 months for hair fall to reduce after diagnosis and another 6months for proper regrowth of hair..

Same thing happened to me a few months ago, I thought there was something wrong with me but I didn't realize I was wearing my hair up so much, I mean I would keep it in a ponytail or bun for 3 days straight and then wash it (without brushing first) and I would have so much hair fallout in the shower! But then I realized that you're supposed to lose quite a number of hairs a day (maybe like 300?) and all of those hairs weren't able to actually fall, and we're stuck in my ponytail/bun. After three days that's a lot of hair that had to come out! So I stopped wearing my hair up so much and always brush my hair before getting in the shower (I don't know why I didn't do that before). And I stopped having such dramatic fall out in the shower! Maybe you're doing some of the same things? I hope I helped you.

If you do need to tie your hair back, invest in some soft hair ties. I don't know exactly what they're called, but you can get ones which are broad elastic a knotted, in lots of pretty designs! They're so gentle on the hair, but still keep it tied back well. I'd also go for a Tangle Teezer or a wet brush to try to reduce damage. Just go really gentle on your hair, and try not to use heat if you can help it.

Be very fragile with your hair at this period. Thinking and stressing too much on hair fall will lead you to worry more about it , it's okay sometimes it's hormone at some period. I experience depressing hair fall for 1yr plus I slowly got used to it and it seems like it also gotten better day by day with less hair falls. Remember not to brush your hair after showering!! that's the critical state which can pull out more hairs! hope it helps goody luck :)
