You can, but it will probably a 'warm' brown when it's done. if you want a cooler or 'ashy' shade then you should bleach it or tone it first

Sure you can :) you could try using a medium ash brown shade if you don't want to have lots of red undertones when it fades a little. The green in the dye will help counteract the warm shades in your hair.
