Why is sulfate bad for hair?

Why is it bad to buy shampoo with sulfate in it? I don't really know what sulfate is.

It strips the hair of it's natural oils and damages the hair, making it brittle and dry.

And if you have colored hair sulfate will take it out.

Mostly it's just a very damaging ingredients. It also completely wrecks colored hair! It really promotes color fading especially with colors like red.
