Why are Sulfates bad for hair? Do they do permanent damage?

May 11, 2014

Shelley W.

They don't do permanent damage but they are very drying to skin and hair if used on a long term basis. Results of use can be reversed by using products that are sulfate free. They do strip hair color so if you're wanting to maintain any highlights/permanent hair color sulfate products are a no-no.

I have seen a huge difference in my hair after using sulfate free shampoo.

My hair always broke off now it's think and grows healthy, the only shampoo I use is the Shea moisture shampoo.

The thing is, if you're using anything that lathers, you're using a surfactant; which is what sulfates are. they are what causes your soap products to lather. from laundry detergent to bubble bath they've all got surfactants. if you want to avoid these because like Shelley said, they can dry out and strip color over time, try using low/no lather or soapless products.

An other note; just because something is sulfate free doesn't mean its surfactant free. the ingredient used in place of the sulfate could be just as harsh.

Kenzie, thank you for that. I didn't know that was the case. Just went 6R and reds fade fast, so I'm trying to be super careful what I use on it.
