What is the purpose of toners for acne prone skin?
other than retinol is there any other otc facial medicine for acne and dark spots that's effective that I can buy at Walmart mart.
I can't find any place that sells retinol which is why I need an alternative.

Basically toners just help remove the makeup that regular cleansers couldn't get and it also helps balance out the pH in the skin.

Exactly what Dee said. It removes any leftover residue from makeup or your cleanser.
As for the retinol, the brand roc has some and they sell at walmart here in Canada. Or try aveenos dark spot corrector moisturizer, I've heard good things about it

Tonerd also irritate the face to encourage swelling in the pores to give the illusion of smaller pores.

There are also different types of toners some are more hydrating and others not so much so much. Something to think about when choosing the right one.

The purpose ( and original ) duty of a toner was to balance the Skins PH level. Without a properly balanced PH level battling issues ( like acne ) can become more hassling. Now toners have other ingredients and more purposes. Some contain salicylic acid, or other chemicals to help combat acne.
For acne I like using Sulfur Ointment since it also helps with cell turn over ( which means it helps with dark spots ). You can also try tea tree oil and dilute it with water ( much better alternative to benzoyl peroxide ). You can also purchase a bottle of vitamin e oil to help with dark spots and even out your skin tone.
These are all available at Walmart ( that's where I got them from. )
As a toner you can try apple cider vinegar. It must be raw, unfiltered organic. The reason being is that you don't want regular vinegar on your face and that a lot of times filtered apple cider vinegar is just regular vinegar with food coloring.
It needs to be diluted 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar. You can add a couple drops of tea tree oil if you like. ACV helps restore the skins PH since it mimics the skins PH and helps with dark spots, redness, evening out your skin tone and acne.
You can also try aloe Vera juice as a toner, aloe Vera helps with acne and dark spots as well.

Lots of products contain retinol. olay, roc, neutragina. you can also use an aha. alpha hydrox is a drug store brand that has glocolic acid great for acne and getting rid of dark marks. vitamin c serum is also great for dark marks but as for a drug store brand I've yet to see one I like. Paula's choice (online) has a great one

I agree with Danny ,you can also try kojic acid serum by derma ,and every drug store sells retinol, Wal-Mart sells retinol ,it may say retinoic acid or retinal on the ingredient deck ,neutrogena and roc both make retinol

Thank you all sooooo very much. I really appreciate it. Very informative.
I've been battling acne for a long time now and I'm 22 years old so It's starting to bother me how I still have acne. I really didn't do too much to help with my acne problem because it wasn't that severe (at least to me it wasn't) buy now I'm going to focus on my cheeks (that's the only part on my face that breaks out and have dark spots)

I don't know why I'm having such a hard time finding these products you all mentioned that I can buy at the store. I found Roc but the ones that they had on the shelves were for wrinkles nada for acne or dark spots. I seen bio oil but could not find vitamin e oil.
so I bought...
1. aveeno positively radiant tone corrector
2. aveeno clear complexion daily moisturizer for acne
3.clean and clear advantage acne spot treatment.
The products mentioned above, are they good?
the face wash I use is cetaphil face wash. If I use the aveeno moisturizer for my acne after using a different brand to wash my face will it irritate my skin or is it bad to use different face products instead of using different ones for different purposes?

Kitty , I will try the apple cider toner. the tea tree oil, what aisle it is usually in? with the face wash?

I've heard lots of good things about the aveeno line. And I use just the regular moisturizer myself. I also love the clean and clear acne spot treatment, my blemishes are gone in like a day and a half once I put that on them. :)
And apple cider vinegar will usually be with cooking. Tea tree oil I'm not sure, I know you could buy them at health stores or skin stores like the body shop but not sure where in normal grocery shops.

I love an organic witch hazel, alcohol free version. Health food stores have that.

Phylicia, retinol is pretty much always marketed for anti aging. so even if it dosent say for dark marks or acne don't worry its what your looking for. now for the products you picked the moisturizer is ok but only has a small amout of salycilic acid look for ones that co.rain 1-2% any lower it won't do much. the tone corrector you picked actually does contain retinol unfortunatly is allthe way at the bottom of the ingredients which means that there is a very small amount in it and won't do much. the spot treatment you choice is good because it contains a good amount of salycilic acid unfortunately alchol is listed as the second ingredient which means it has a lot of it in it. alcohol can irrate and damage your skin. also yes you can definitely use different brands as long as they have different purposes. hope this helps a little

Thank you so much danny. so should I get the roc face products and take the aveeno back?
Feb 6, 2014
Danny C.
Like I said that aveeno tone correcting dosent look as though it has enough in it to help. I'd get the roc. now you want to start out using this only a few times a week and build up a tolerance. some people can get dry.

Toners remove any traces of makeup or dirt that didnt come off when you cleansed your face. The other purpose of toners is to "tone" your skin or prepare your skin for the other skin care products you apply after toning your face. Avoid retinol if you go out in the sun. It can get you skin damage because the skin gets more sensitive when we apply retinol. Avoid ones that contain alcohol in them too. This can dry your skin and cause irritation.:)
