Ok... Aside from the possible ethical issue of it; What are the pros and cons of using brushes with animal hair as opposed to synthetic??? What works best for you?

I don't know I've always been to poor to invest in brushes but I am buying my first set soon :) I believe there is no difference, what it depends on is the quality and cut of the brushes

If the cruelty-free-ness of the brushes doesn't bother you; animal hair brushes are just like human hair, they cuticle of the hair is rougher. They pick up powder product more and blend make-up better. Synthetic brushes make it easier to apply cream and liquid products (mostly because they're easier to wash out!) and pick up the creams better as the bristles are smoother. However there are really high quality synthetic brushes available that cover all these things too, the differences between the two are usually only marginal but that's what they are :) just use what works best for you!

the argument is that animal hair picks up and or blends powder products better. as a pro who has only been using synthetics for years I can tell you if you buy the RIGHT synthetics this is simply not true. here is a video explaining the technology behind 1 brand of high quality synthetics and how they were designed to mimic animal hair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtj2onSnAuo&feature=youtube_gdata_player

unfortunately synthetic brushes of the past didn't pick up or blend powder well and a lot of people don't realize the technogy has changed. synthetics are more hygenic and since they can be used with both powder and creams they are a better value. cost wise the most expensive synthetic is still cheaper than the most expensive animal hair brush I could find plus no shedding with synthetics

I find that brushes with synthetic hairs are usually firmer and denser, so are better for things like applying foundation and blending. However, I personally think that animal hair brushes are a lot softer and fluffier, so are good for applying powders lightly. I have a mixture of synthetic and animal hair brushes, even though I'm against animal cruelty. I just prefer the subtle effect the animal hair provides.
