Help with red hair.

Yesterday I colored my hair red. My hair was a light brown so it covered pretty well and I love the color it turned out. I'm worried I won't be able to get this color again because if I dye it again the color is obviously darker so I'm afraid the red will go darker too. I don't have much experience with red hair so maybe I'm wrong. Does anyone know how I can continue to get this red I love and any tips on helping the red not to fade?

Thank you!!

Okay well first of all, how to touch it up: apply the same color, only on your roots, with a root comb (Clairol has one, I'm sure you can find them at a beauty supply store). That will prevent the color from changing on the rest of your hair.
Second, how to keep it from fading: this is a hard one. I've had red hair, it's a pain to maintain. First, get a color care shampoo and conditioner like Pureology. You can also add red dye to your shampoo and conditioner, which should help. Also, it's a common misconception that shampooing causes your hair to fade; it does, but the thing to avoid is standing under the running water. Limit your hair's exposure to water as much as you can, even in your showers. Dry shampoo is your friend.

The roots aren't really my concern its more when this red fades how I will get it back to the red I have now since my hair won't be as light as it was when I dyed it this time.

Ah. My thought would be not to leave it on as long, but I'm honestly unsure. I don't dye my own hair so unfortunately I can't help with that.

I agree with Hannah except I use Nexxus Color Shampoo and Conditioner, also use cold water when washing your hair.

But I would just use the same color you did the first time, thats usually what I used to do when I did box dyes, and it turned out the same.

If you touch up every few weeks to months it should not make your hair darker b/c the permanent hair dye will fade with time. Good idea to stick with one brand/shade if you really like it because if you experiment with other boxed dyes they may lead to darker than you intended. If you want to avoid build-up of dark pigmentation or damage with over-use of permanent dyes, try using semi-permanent reds (like L'oreal glosses if you want more muted red, or manic panic/special effects for more vibrant red - you can tone down the vibrancy with conditioner or pastel mixer). Not shampooing too often definitely helps to maintain the vibrancy, or shampooing with a light non-stripping formula (conditioning/color protection shampoos rather than head and shoulders). Hope this helps!
