Are you totally new to eyeshadow? If you are my first move would not be a smoky eye. I know that's not a fun answer but I would get more aware and comfortable working with shadows and how to blend them effectively before jumping into it, for a few good reasons: the lessons learned along the way will give you so many options for eye makeup, you will become more skilled and have more control, you will learn about product more and what is a problem you are having vs a problem with a product itself, or a way to solve a problem you're experiencing by using a certain product, and in the end while your first attempts will still be frustrating you will ultimately achieve the look you want and be satisfied rather than jumping in blindly and being so disappointed that you give up altogether.
I think just taking at least two weeks, in a boot camp style, you could work up to it.

Basically you just have to take time and work with your crease.

I like Bree's suggestion. a true Smokey eye is not a novice look to achieve. I'm certainly not an expert but I've been doing my makeup for 10 years and I still struggle with this look. I would start out with one color to get your feet wet and when you feel comfortable with that, add an other color either for your crease or a highlighter and just keep adding from there. just make sure your blending is solid before you add colors :)
