The easy thing to do is put dye in your shampoo and conditioner, or buy a red shampoo and conditioner. I also love the Pureology line, formulated without sulfates, sodium chloride, and specially for colored hair :) works like a dream, I believe they have specific red hair products.

I love pureology so ill have to check it out if they do. if I do end up making my own do I use semi permanent or permanent and do I need one without the developer or do I just put that in there too.
