So I've had about every hair color, (blonde, platinum blonde, brown, dark brown, and black) and I want something new! I've been wanting to go red for awhile, so I'm pretty much convinced that I'm going to do it! I just think it's so pretty and whenever I see a red hair with pretty beachy saves I think of the Little Mermaid haha. Right now my hair is dyed black, but it's fading because of natural washing and then the sun, and my tips are lighter and subtle ombre'd.
So my question is what are the steps and products I would need to take/get to achieve a red color? The picture below is kinda what I'm aiming for.
And please don't tell me to go to a salon because I hate other people touching my hair, I kinda have a really huge thing about it and don't trust anyone else.
And any other tips about keeping up the red too or just ANYTHING I should know would be very helpful to please!

Hmm... Well this might sound really crazy, but I dyed the tips of my hair with cherry kool aid. I have dark brown hair, but the hair took the kool aid and made it a maroony-red color, so that's all I have with experience with red hair. If I were you, I'd strip the hair of your color now, and then dye it red

Well if youre trying to go that vibrant the steps I would take would be:
1. Use a color stripper. I'd recommend color oops. That should bring you back to a base color like brown or something I'm not entirely sure it may even go as far as blonde.
2. Since youre hair will be lighter or at least it should be, I'd go with Ion Color Brilliance or Manic Panic in terms of hair dye. I personally mixed the two and had very vibrant results, again my own personal experience.
3. A deep conditioning treatment would be good after everything too.

Thats just what I would do in order to try and avoid bleach even though you could also use that to achieve a brighter red color :)

Kaitlin: hmmm kool aid sound very interesting! How long did the kool aid last? And thank you for the advice! :)
Dorothea: thank you so much! I will definitely check out alllll of those products! How long did that last for you before it started to fade and such?

Well originally I dyed my hair with loreal hicolor for dark hair in magenta and 40 developer. That lasted me a good like 4 months starting from February before it faded to this muddy looking red brown color. Then I refreshed the color with the above products I mentioned before in May. And so far it's still holding up really well.
Cold or more lukewarm water is best when washing red hair or any other unnatural hair color to help keep from fading the color so fast as well.

@Jennifer, the kool aid is permanent until I cut it out! The kool aid actually stains the hair, so it'll never fade

Haha it's okay Erin! 😂😂 Thank you! I like how red that made your hair! And thank you for the Shampoo recommendation, I was wondering about which ones were good ones for it. ☺️
