once you see the ends rising to the root. but I wouldn't trim that often if you want your hair to grow out just make sure your keeping your hair up as often as possible so split ends wont occur and purchase a satin head cap

Buns are awesome for protecting your ends especially in the winter months!

I can tell my hair is ready for a trim when I am getting more tangles, the hair doesn't stay smooth overnight (wake up in the morning and its tangled or frizzy). and just by touching it.. when my ends feel dry I will usually cut an inch or two. But I don't follow the 6-8 week rule.. it would be too much for me!

Vanessa, has your diet changed recently? Are you under more stress than usual?

Hair naturally sheds- sometimes more than average and sometimes less. As long as the hair shedding is consistent all over your scalp and as long as your hair isn't coming out in clumps, you should be fine. It is in no way an indication that you need to trim your ends (since hair grows from the root). Like previous posters have said, one if the best ways to tell is split ends. Also mentioned is another good indicator: when your ends feel dry, frazzled and lifeless

Thank you pixie i was really getting worried. Its not coming out in clumps but more than average. My ends get super dry right when i get out the shower so i think its time for a trim.

My pleasure Vanessa. I went through the same thing as you several years ago and was in a panic. If your hair is longer too, it's more noticeable. It seems like there's a bigger ball of hair than someone with short hair. (Not to sound gross or anything, heh). If your ends feel dry right out of the shower, than your thinking is spot on.. It's probably time to get them trimmed. Hair grows an average of 1/2 an inch per month (slightly faster in the summer & slower in the winter).
