Makeup, hair, tats, etc are all a part of self expression. I find it all to be an art form, I wear very bold colorful makeup daily and I love it. At one point ladies I worked with started with " I would never wear that color", to now asking me "hey can you do my makeup". Its a conversation piece for me as well, I feel bare without my reds, oranges, greens, etc. Keep expressing yourself anyway you want and just smile(: thats what I do.

I used to get stuff like that all the time. I had a "let's wear dark clothes and too much black eyeliner" phase in middle school and into high school. I still love dark, weird things and black is still a large part of my wardrobe, but I'm a bit more tame overall. I still do what I want and just try to explain that I wear what I wear because I like it and that's my prerogative. It was awful when I was in middle school though. I wore armfulls of those little colored rubber "jelly" bracelets, and I would have jocky, asshole guys come up to me and start touching them and asking me why I wore them. I slapped their hands away and told them something along the lines of "because I f--------- want to, now get the hell away from me." They were actually worse than the girls!! The girls at least had the good grace to ignore me most of the time. Back then I didn't even try to explain to them why I like the things I do, and I still don't today. Unless someone is genuinely interested in it, I just tell them "because I like it." or "its fun. I wouldn't go up to someone with their makeup done in a more conservative way than I do mine and ask "why do you wear such boring makeup?" because it would be ridiculously rude. People should think about things like that before they speak!

Sadly these ppl often look shocked when I tell them the questions they ask are offensive and inappropriate...they really think this is ok behavior

When I'm sporting my "Chaka Khan" look ( big wild hair with a super dark lippie) I had a woman tell me straight out I needed to flat iron my birds nest for hair. That day my husband was with me and not in a great mood....he told her to go get a weave because the Yul Brenner look is not attractive (she had some serious bald spots). Keep being you and don't allow rude, insenstive people ruin your day.

All of you girls make me smile so much, just be yourselves and either ignore people or tell them to butt out of your life. I like what Sevetria said, hahha.

I just laugh and say why not? And I mean seriously why not? Life's much too short to be boring. If I want to dye my hair purple and turquoise to match my prom dress, I will. And it was fun. I live in a small rural part of Iowa, and while I do get some weird looks for the most part I get compliments. I just laugh at everyone who says negative things because they really have no idea. What's the point of life if you're not having any fun? Lol

I LOVE this thread. I will openly admit that when I first looked at Beautylish I naively expected people to be very middle-of-the-road, conservative, media-style beauty orientated. Instead there's an amazing mixture of people on here, from the natural to the beautifully outrageous & everything in between. I don't think I've ever seen such a great 'screw you, we are who are & we all rock' thread anywhere!
Ok, sorry...[/corny] :-D
I adore the moustache reply, I'm stealing that one! Chatting to a tattoo artist who had ink on every visible inch skin except her face; she said its the greatest bullsh*t detector in the world - if somebody avoids or is rude to her because if the way she looks, she knows they weren't worth her time anyway. I love that.

... I am guilty of sometimes getting nasty. Once I was at work, my hair was white and I had a big black flower in it. This rude old lady came up and told me that no man would want me and on and on. I tried being polite, and thought I squashed it. But she brought it back up and finally I said something along the lines of I hope no man ever does want me cause I'm a lesbian! And she responded saying at least those homos are into weird stuff. Needless to say I was a little unhappy.
But usually I just get cocky and sarcastic. "I know, I think I look just great." And I play like they're complimenting me instead of criticizing me.

Unless in a situation where I absolutely had to respond, I think I generally just raise an eyebrow and move on. I don't have to deal with that much, though... The, I guess weirdest was once my graphic design teacher asked me if I played video games... because I looked like I did. For the record, this is a 9am class that I generally stumbled into in a kind of anime style t-shirt and no makeup.
The hilarious part was the next day when I came in for something else, saw her, and she just kind of stared at me and said "You know... you're a bit of a bombshell in that makeup." The look on my face must have been entertaining because I didn't know how to react. I like my GD teacher, I think she's fun, but some of the things that come out of her mouth... XD
Bottom line is that I'm comfortable in my own skin and I don't care what people think. I go out bare faced, glammed up, and extremely bright. I've been lucky enough to not have too many questions asked, but I do catch some weird looks. That's okay, though, I'm wearing what I like. :]

Well, considering I've got a blue streak in my hair, I've gotten some weird looks and I basically ignore them. I've told people that point blank, it's my hair. I'm going to so with it what I will. I got a job with a blood red streak and my boss was totally okay with me dying the blue. I blow it off. I like my hair like this and why should I care what you think. I am planning on dying my whole head purple one day. When I have a different job.
