Straight hair growing back curly?

So I've been considering getting a half shave for a while, and I'm 75% convinced I should get one. My friend (who shaved her head for cancer research) mentioned to me the other day that her hair was straight before, and after she shaved it it grew back super curly.
So now I'm hesitant because I obviously don't want one side curly and one side straight when/if I decide to grow it out. So I guess my question is does this happen often? Does straight hair always grow back curly? Are there ways to 'reduce' the chances of it?

I shaved my side of my head and it is growing back great still straight but a little thicker

I shaved half my head and I have naturally straight hair and it didnt grow back curly.

I ' ve been to the same situation my hair was straight and after cutting them they get curly in some parts and its really annoying.
