I suggest a curling wand. I have a Karmin G3 Clipless curling wand and it's extremely versatile, it's 1 inch.

I think you should get the babyliss 1". I think that size is the most versatile and if you want to use it as a wand just disregard the clip and wrap your hair around the outside. For your first purchase this is a good quality iron for a good price that you can get a lot of different looks with.

Also, if you want looser curls just take more hair in the section. Tighter curls less hair.

I use and love the karmin clipless curling iron it's amazing the things that you can do. And this curling iron has a 1/2" to 1" inch so you can create any type of curls.
