Get a straight nail clipper instead of using a curved one, it's much easier to get a squared off shape that way. But in my experience having a square nail shape leads to chipping/breakage because the edges get caught on things. If you keep them short you should be okay.

Def. use a nail hardener/strengthener so that your nails can get to a longer length before cutting them square. After you get them to optimal length, continue using the hardener to keep your nails in good condition!

I file my nails in a square shape and usually they're ok. Sometimes if they break or something they're just going to have a little chip out of the square, not much you can do about that. I keep mine short, too, though. I used to think they had to be long to be square but they don't. I do round the corners slightly.

thanks everyone for the answers :) ,and I do try and keep them short but I'll definitely get straight clippers.
