Look at photography with models. see how they pose for different types of photographs, how they use angles, the lighting, etc. I think those are pretty pictures, but in reality anyone can take a picture of a pretty building at an angle, turn it black & white, & it'll be pretty like that. just keep practicing with things around the house. like a pet, jewelry, flowers, etc :)

I think you're really good and could be great with more practice.
I don't agree that anyone could do that; you have to have an eye for it.

Thanks, it was a project, I had to do images from the 40s so I just.made them black and white.

I do photography and those are good. But doing models is something totally different. You have to tell the people how to stand and move. It can be difficult. Taking pictures of object is a lot easier. Also having a good camera helps a lot. I'm not sure you turned the picture black and white for a reason. But I find sometimes a colored picture looks better black and white and it hides mess ups.
If you really want to do models you have to practice first. Take friends and go places with them. Practice makes everything better. I took my sister and my friends and practiced on them when I started out. Some people having a natural talent in themselves fir photography. You might have it. Also don't be discouraged with how many photos don't turn out when you do models. You want to take as many pictures as you can and pick from them. A lot of them will not be that good most the time. It's just how it happens. Like sometimes I get 33 good photos out of 70 I have taken. Then sometimes you get a lot of good ones. Some times it just deals with the model listening also. But don't get discouraged cuz not everything is going to be perfect.
So I wish you luck. :)
If you have any questions you can just ask ^_^

Hi Ashley! I really liked your pictures, I like photography too, once I was on a photoshoot with a model helping with the make up, she was a professional and it seemed she did all by herself she really knew the poses and intentions and she didn't need directions, she was amazing. The photographer told me that she was great but it was difficult to find girls like she because most of them are bad-mooded and feel like superstars, they don't follow indications and are rude, so I think it depends on the girl, but if you have a lot of practice like Shannon said it'll be easier to make a good picture even if the model is rude (at least you'll have to suffer her less time) :)

Lighting is key. My mom is a professional photographer. Also, work with a manual film camera first. No digital cameras as that's cheating and they do the work for you. If you want to be a real photographer, you have to learn about lighting and exposure. Different angles and lenses. A film camera is the best way to learn. You'll have a bunch of crappy pictures before you get good. Right now, work on objects and positions with different lighting as exposure. Then you can do people.

Oh and I like the first colored the best. It has the best lighting and exposure contrast. The others are kind of flat. But just keep practicing! :)

Lighting gives the picture dimension and life. Don't ever take photos in flat lighting (over cast skies) evening or early morning are the best times to take pictures.

I have worked with film but it got pricey and the camera sucked. But I am saving up for a new one because I love film photos. I also want my own dark room someday. I just love the feeling of it.

Yeah film cameras can be pricey :/ but they are worth it ^_^ in my opinion, they give the best results. Follow your dreams! Have fun and don't get discouraged. I tried photography (thanks mom) and I don't have the talent for it. Judging from your photos, you have some talent for it. Good luck :)

I wouldn't mind having the first one framed for my wall! Seriously great job! It'd be awesome to see it with some tiny bursts of color here and there with models in the photos. Like making the models the focal point having them wear bright colors against the black and white backing. I'd pay for that any day of the week! You have talent for sure!! :D.

So I'm a little late finding your post, but those are absoultely lovely photographs! Working with models in challenging, but one thing you can do is try to find an experienced model to work with. They know how to take direction, so you can get a handle on what works best. You can always just try working with a friend you are super comfortable with, because that might be even easier. It can be a little awkward when you first start, but it is worth it. I don't think using digital is cheating at all. you can turn a digital camera to manual mode and work from there pretty much the same as a manual film slr. But a film camera doesn't need to be expensive. A kodak pentax or and olympus omf can be pretty affordable. Anywhere from 10 to 80 dollars, with a lens, and they are very very nice cameras. Its the photopaper that gets me! almost a dollar a sheet! Simple makeup for a model still isn'g very simple though. you use more makeup than you would think to create a base canvas, most of the time.

A tip for models: ask them to follow your right hand with their eyes and move their face to position it where your left hand is
It really help when trying to get them looking exactly how you want

Nadra, I've never had a photographer do that to me before. That seems like a strange way to do it. I've always just been told to look towards the lens or away, and if I look to far off, they tell me to look back towards the camera. I'm one of those models though who always look awkward when a photographer tells me an exact pose to do.
