You can start by doing makeup on friends and save those pics as example of your work. Network with local models and photographers. As for makeup school that is not completely necessary you can do a certification course instead. Some but not all clients ask for education. If you get the chance do a free photo shoot so you can get some professional images. The nicer the pictures and work the more the clients will prefer your work.

I agree with Nadine I'm trying to get a salon in my garage! But first learn everything I can! I have not gone to school for anything. Take pic before and after when you do your makeup and others. You can also start by making a page on Facebook and inviting local friends and friends of friends to have a free trial or low cost and get your name out there. Make where ever you do the make up at very professional like. So your clients feel the same atmosphere as a salon or a relaxing atmosphere; somewhere where they'd want to come again for the relaxation and cheaper prices and great beautiful makeup n ask if you can take a before and after picture of them to help build your profolio
