I have fairly straight hair and every time I try to curl it, the curls fall out within 15 minutes! I've tried all kinds of mouses and hairsprays and nothing works!! I've kept my hair on the curling iron for almost 30 seconds at a time too(which I know is HORRIBLE) so that's not an issue. Any suggestions?

I have a very similar hair type. What I do is I put a little mousse in my hair while it's still damp. Then I use the Not Your Mother's heat protectant (it's only $6 and you can find it at walmart or ulta) because it actually is specifically made to help hold curls. Then I find it really helps to do small sections of hair at a time, and then finish with hairspray. Hope that helps!

Maybe try using a really small barrel instead of a larger barrel. That way when the curls fall they wont turn stick straight, but instead into a looser curl?

Amelia: Thank you for the suggestions!! I never would have thought to put the mousse in while my hair is still wet!
Andrew: Haha I'm sorry you had to resort to cutting your hair but I think it looks really good on you!! :)
Erica- I'll try getting a 1 inch barrel or so and see how that goes! Thank you for the help:)

When your curl your hair, make sure your hair is somewhat "dirty" (not freshly washed or deep conditioned). This makes it difficult for the hair to hold the curl. My hair does not stay curled for a long time if I use a curling iron but if I use a flat iron to curl, it stays for the whole day and even the day after!

Agreed w/Korie. You can also use hairspray on each section before you curl it, just be sure to comb it through before applying heat. After each curl, gently coil and pin it up and allow it to cool. After it's all curled/coiled/pinned, give it a good spray over again and let it set while you do your makeup, get dressed, etc. Remove the pins and shake it out. Should last longer!

I agree with Korie, you need to make sure there are natural oils in your hair when you curl it. You might also want to let them set and cool so the curls stay longer. When I curl my hair (which goes flat if I don't do this), I pin curl them and let the set for at least 20 minutes. It helps so much.

Thank you all for your tips!! I'll definitely try them the next time I have access to a curling iron:)

Ohh this is a pain. I have straight asian hair that DOES NOT CURL. It drives me nuts since I usually end up attacking my hair with a bottle of hair spray. And when I say attack, I mean DRENCH my hair in it. I tend to pin my curls up now or wrap my hair in a bun so that after a few hours, my hair has some sort of a curl and some curl is better than no curl. But lately, I've been opting to use dry shampoo on days I know I'll be curling my hair since just washed hair is the worst to curl whereas day old hair is not so much. Then... I tease and spray.  Yay.

I used to think that my hair just wouldn't hold a curl... turns out my curling iron sucked. Get a good one, it's the only way you'll get the quality of heat necessary to make a curl that'll last. Or just use an insane amount of hairspray? Ever consider getting a body wave at a salon (I know, so 80s, right??).. but maybe they work!
