I started my makeup collection 6 years ago. I started out buying MAC eyeshadows. I focused on getting 2-3 each Friday when I got paid. When I got extra money I spent it on makeup. Once I got a good collection going then I ventured out into other stuff like building up my blushes, lip sticks and liners. Along the way I have tried new products and I resale or giveaway the products I dont like (depending on what it is)....Part of the fun is having the drive and passion to build a collection! If you bought it all at once it would take a lot of the fun out of it! Good luck !!!

I'm right there with you! I'm obsessed with buying makeup. But!! I also live on a strict budget and can't afford a lot. My rule when I really want something is to first do my research, read reviews and so forth and then wait. I tell myself if 2 weeks or a month from now, I really really can't live without it, then I usually go ahead and think about buying it. Maybe not the most sound advice, but I either wind up changing my mind or getting something really cool :)

yeah i am the same way Christina G. before i buy something i make sure that i read the reviews about the product and see if its what i am looking for,

Just buy what you can and it will all slowly build up. I've been collecting for almost 3 years but my collection is mainly drugstore. Try looking for deals and sales. As far as high end products, I usually buy palettes and value sets because you get more for your money.

It takes time to build a collection especially if you are on a budget. SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE sometimes getting samples of things you want to get will change our mind on actually going forward with purchasing the product. And a lot of the times samples will last you so this would give you more time to think about it and see if is really worth the buy.

Check out GlamLifeGuru on YouTube. She teaches you how to work sales at the drugstores to your advantage so you don't upset your wallet!!

I've been following her advice and today I bought two Revlon color burst lipglosses that would have cost $15+ together. But I paid $3! Def check her out!! She's awesome.

I've been in love with makeup since I was itty bitty, but started collecting around 12-14? I've paid for majority of my collection I'm proud to say. :) Around 90% as a guesstimate. I do have a quite large collection not crazy huge but pretty big mostly from collecting pigments and then eye shadows.

I do have quite a bit of drugstore products but I regret wasting money on so much of it. I'm getting more higher end and trying to reduce my drugstore items but there are great drugstore picks out there.

Just research a lot and try to swatch/test out products beforehand if you can, especially higher end products. And pick what products you're really going to want to use all the time and love. You don't need to have a big collection but one that will work for you, you feel comfortable playing with & are going to want to play with/use all the time.

Good luck! :)

You can always ask for gift cards to makeup stores for birthdays & holidays if you'd really like as well. I agree with the other responses though, definitely not something to obsess over.

Melissa,

I have felt this way, but it just takes time. I used to see a video, run out and get the product...and then it would just sit. I really think it's better to focus on a few really good things than just getting a whole slew of things. I keep getting rid of stuff, to be honest!

Some really easy and inexpensive ways to build a collection:

-Research drugstore products. Wet N Wild makes some really good stuff, believe it or not. ELF, too. Just look online first to see what is good so you don't waste money on the iffy stuff. Milani is another great drugstore brand.
-CCO's. This is a great way to buy discounted but quality stuff, like MAC and Bobbi Brown.
- Join discount groups, like Sephora and Ulta's frequent shopper programs. That way you get more bang for your buck, earning freebies and stuff.
- Swap with other people so you can try out things they like

Just some ideas! Best of luck!

The best thing i ever did, was buy Coastal Scents 88 palettes. I have 2 of them - matte and shimmer; i use them all the time and i can create amazing looks with them! I bought them on amazon for £25-£30 and the fact i get that many colours for such a small price compared to the high end brands (which would be soooo much more of course for just a few of their colours).

In my pics you can see what i've been able to do with the palettes, they're brilliant quality and perfect for someone who's just starting out their kit! <3

I don't have the largest collection, it's rather medium sized, but I have made it a goal not to buy something unless I really think I need it. At first I did want to buy everything I saw on YT, just like you, but as I've acquired more palettes and things, I find myself looking at newer items and comparing it to stuff I already have. That helps me a lot. I'll remind myself that I already have something similar and ask if I really desperately need it.

For example; there are some really cute neutral palettes out right now, from STILA and SEPHORA, and Kat Von D, to name a few brands, but I have the UD Naked Palette and that was a splurge in itself. So do I want one of the others? Yes. Do I need to buy it? No. Therefore I am making myself stay away.

As someone said before, give yourself at least 2 weeks to ponder about a high-end product, and if you still find you can't live without it, go ahead and splurge but make sure not to do it again soon.

Also, the drugstore does have some great items as well as BH and Coastal Scents. Not to mention trying samples of items. Sometimes a product is hyped up and then you get your hands on it and hate it. So definitely research before spending.

I started my senior year of high school in 2009. I developed an interest after coming across youtube videos and decided that would be a really cool and fun hobby. Honestly, I had a part-time job in highschool and didn't have bills, so I just usually bought one-two things I wanted each paycheck or so when I went shopping, and after so long I had a huge collection of stuff. I also did extensive research on products that I was interested in and read reviews, especially for more expensive products to make sure people with my skin type were able to use it, that the quality was worth the money, etc etc. After awhile, you'll look around one day and realize how much stuff you have and you won't even remember the time it took to accumulate it.

Also, setting a wishlist was big for me! It helped me from making splurge purchases I didn't need, and knowing which products I had looked into that would be good purchases. Good luck!

@ Cameron, I started to get into make up last year in my Junior year, since i also started to watch youtube vidoes that beauty gurus have. I do the same things you do, like do research on expensive products and make a wish list. thanks so much for your advice!

Great advice, everyone! I am def going to check out GlamLifeGuru!

I seriously got into makeup in March 2010. I started off with a little bit of products from the drugstore. Bought some Sally Hansen Carmindy trios, lipsticks, and some other stuff like L'Oreal, Covergirl ect. I just wanted to play around and teach myself how to apply makeup properly.

I then bought 2 88 palettes from Coastal Scents, and a blush palette. These are great for starting out because you have a huge range of colors and go from there. Then I discovered MAC and Sephora.

It takes time to get a collection, and don't worry about being jealous. I for one never get jealous of ones collection. I might see a few items I might want that person has, but jealous? no. I really like my collection, because theres a mix of everything in there.

Just be patient and get stuff gradually, if not you'll end up wasting money and regretting a lot of purchases.
