I wrote a blog post on how to pack for college, specifically about beauty items and jewelry. This is from my experience last year as a freshman and I'm sharing what worked for me since at the time, I couldn't find any helpful articles about it. Hopefully it is helpful!

Ahh thank you! This is so helpful for me :) I already have a small soft trancase and other various bags (My parents got me a set of 5 or 6 for my birthday from caboodle) and currently my makeup is stored in a 3drawer thing. This wil be good to know how to transport my stuff better!
Thanks!!

As a senior, I agree that locks are a great idea. Even if you know your roommie, you're not going to know all the people that will be in and out of your space. Locks are a good idea for all your valuables... so many people get ipods and game systems stolen in the dorms, it's bad news.

Thank you for this! I was just laying in bed last night thinking about how I need to start packing! :)

Ohhh memories... my first year at SSU I had two other roommates in the same tiny room and shared a bathroom with FIVE girls! It was crazy (although a lot of fun mosts of the time) but I have to agree, you need a way to discreetly protect your stuff. I made the mistake of being too nice right off the bat with the "what's mine is yours" policy. I think in addition to taking measures to keep ur stuff seperate (like a locked kaboodle) it's a good idea to clearly state your "sharing policy" asap. If you're not into sharing I'd just put that out there right away and not feel bad about it. I was sick for practically the entire first year- and it was probably because I was sharing all of my stuff with five other people!

Catey: That's so true, people in my dorm were way too trusting- they would just leave their door unlocked when they went places- and I can't believe I was the only one out of others I met that had a laptop lock! Someone could just grab and take it really quickly which is scary since a students life is on there and it's probably the most expensive thing students own.
Erica: You're welcome! It definitely takes longer than you expect to pack everything up! Plus, if you do it ahead of time you can remember things you've forgotten :)
Angela: I think everyone has crazy stories to tell after living in a dorm :) That would definitely be a good idea- I was like that too with my roommate at first cause I wanted to be nice, but then I saw how she took care of her things, which was horrible, so I didn't let her borrow anything of mine cause I knew she would ruin them. She was also the most unclean person I've ever met. Disgusting.

My makeup bags don't have a lock but I don't know if I'll store them in that all the time, I may get an underbed storage where I can organize my beauty products and then just have a blanket that falls over my bed and hides it :D OR a curtain in my closet (if they don't have doors) and then that way it'll also be hidden away but still accessible :D

Erica: You can get them from Best Buy:

That's the one I used and it worked all year for me so I don't understand the average reviews... but make sure to attach the cord to a heavy desk if you can or something that can't be removed easily from the room (I wrapped mine around my desk hutch) and lock it up every time you leave it in your room (also make sure your computer is password protected).

Haha I wouldn't have either if my Dad and brother weren't so obsessed with computers (they seriously know everything, it's crazy) Yeah mine got heavy lugging it around so I only took it when I really needed it- Oh and it connects to your laptop with a notch on your computer somewhere, it was like an indent with no purpose until I found out what it was used for :)
