If you want loose waves without heat here's another way:
After you've washed and towel dried your hair, apply a leave in conditioner or hair serum and comb through. Then part hair as desired and make one loose braid. After braided hair has dried, take out the braid and comb through with fingers. This gives your hair really shiny, beachy looking waves. It's great to do this the night before and sleep with the braid to give it more time to dry and set the shape.

Yes it works with curly hair as well, the end result will be slightly different but still very pretty. Good luck!
