UK Bans Lancome ad for being to air brushed

Recently a Lancome ad featuring Julia Roberts has been banned in the UK. The ad was for one of their newest foundations, but the Committee of Advertising Practice and Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice has banned these adverts because they are "too airbrushed" and "misleading".
What are your opinions on this? Is this good, that they are starting to bann misleading cosmetic advertisements, or is this just how it's always been?

Of course I have to add my opinion. I, personally am glad they finally stepped in. Im sick of seeing advertisements that are overly photoshoppped and air brushed. This is basically why I refuse to pay attention to cosmetic advertisements at all anymore. If the product actually works as they say they should need any type of photoshopping.
Honestly this is why I have really high respect for MUFE, because when they released their advert for their High Definition Foundation they released the first non-photoshopped advertisement.

Yeah, I find it really annoying when I flip through a magazine and see an ad for mascara, and the model's lashes are clearly not "hers". It's false advertising - and I'm kind of happy someone's taken a stand on that sort of thing.

so true i watched this on the news a few minutes ago.... agree with kimberly the mascara gets me. i hate when you see a really pretty look in an add and u look at it more and its about the mascara and the lashes look huge and so fake ,,,

Don't get me wrong - I looooooooooooove me some false eyelashes. But for the large percentage of women who don't wear them, seeing those ads sets them up for disappointment. It's really unfortunate, not only in the unfairness of it, but when a client asks me why their lashes don't look like "that" after using a product, I have to explain why. What's even more unfortunate is that the ad business preys on women who believe they have to look like the models who endorse their products. Shame, really.

I am SO glad that they stepped in and didn't allow the ads to be run. Has anyone seen some of the horrific Victoria's Secret photoshopping mishaps? It's ridiculous how they can take off half someone's thigh because it was a little too muscular, or even call Doutzen Kroes FAT. As much as I love fashion and beauty....I totally dislike advertising like this. As if girls and women didn't have enough other things to worry about....

I saw this controversy on FB yesterday and I am glad! Just like Kimberly M. is saying, it IS false advertising when they use false lashes for mascara ads.I have a 12 yr old and I have to make sure she understands and embraces her individual beauty versus trying to become something she is not.Coming here to Beautylish makes me appreciate real women and their real beauty. XoXO

@Kimberly I totally agree with you on calling it false advertisement because it is. Being completely into the makeup industry I try to learn about advertisement and products. And it's come to my attention that it's not just mascara products being falsely advertised but eyeshadows, liners and blush products as well. Companies will have the audacity to use other people's produts in place of their own or over their own to emphasise their products. this sickens me.

Before my friends or family members buy products I always tell ask them why they want to and if they say it's because they liked the how it looked in the advertisement I always tell them to do some research, look up reviews on youtube or on blogs, and check out the actualy site, beore they buy the product at all.

LOL, the maybelline ones... maybe she's born with it... maybe it's maybeline... but it's probably photoshopped

I feel like I can sue any mascara company these days & win. Their adds are ridiculously misleading.

If any of you are interested, my Twitter buddy Elena has made a documentary called "The Illusionists" that centers on this issue exactly. I know it's kind of an oxymoron, being in this business and supporting a film that tears it down a bit - but what she has to say is really important, especially to younger girls who see ads and buy into it. You can have a look here: http://theillusionists.org/

And even more important is knowing the difference between what's real and attainable without going to extremes, and the obvious dangers of those extremes.

Thanks Kimberly I will check it out. I think it's important to show my daughter

Seriously I am tired of all the LIES! We are consistently being tricked and lied to, whether it's about makeup, skin care, hair care, news reports, food, everything! When did it become okay to lie about something just so you can sell it?

Kimberly, that documentary looks great and I'll definitely be supporting!

the fake lashes thing has bothered me for years...and now i find it funny to hear the "maybelline Falsies" mascara commercial talking about how you get the look of falsies without them with this amazing mascara....then the girl is obviously wearing fake lashes lol

I too am sick of the lies in the cosmetic/beauty industry in the ads.

The Maybelline mascara commercials where they claim it's going to make the lashes longer and look like fake lashes... well duh! If you WEAR false lashes like the model is then sure it'll look fantastic.

The Covergirl foundation commercials tick me off because they claim it'll do this and that. All BS, actually that's the same with ALL foundation companies. Here's one by Maybelline claiming their Dream Mousse will make your skin look airbrushed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTgeUVOxl8E - sure it does... not!

Here's the commercial for Maybelline XXL and you can clearly see the false lashes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mosyyfLCky8

Maybelline Volum Express mascara - again you can see the fake lashes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPZuuU7ziio

Maybelline Colossal Lash commercial - again you can see her natural lashes under the long fake ones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rgAujUoSwc yet they claim it's her natural lashes.

Frankly the US FDA and FCC needs to do have stricter regulations on cosmetics. Too many lies and false claims as well as too many companies passing stuff off as growing lashes or eyebrows or whatever. Sick of it.

I agree with you all on this. Many make up add campaigns think we are stupid. Show us what your product will do for the normal person. I believe in a lot of low end (maybeline, covergirl etc) the model isn't wearing that brand product to get the look anyway.

Here's part of a pic from the L'Oreal mascara ad with Gwen Stefani. (from http://www.beautylish.com/t/vrsii/omg-new-amazing-drugstore-mascara)

Notice her fake lashes in the last image. I've zoomed in and marked where her natural lashes end and the fakes continue on. So sick of ads like this, it should be banned in the US.

I can make my lashes longer by putting on false lashes and any mascara. That doesn't say much for the mascara.

Omg, funniest thing, this dog is afraid of that ad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtT9X4eT_Ss

Obviously he knows what's up.

I find it terrible that they can prey on the population at large by using multiple techniques claiming their product did it all. You hardly need any mascara when you're wearing false lashes. This is why I always research a product on here or youtube before purchasing.

Well, I do cause I've got clear lashes.  lol
