Last week I only had cough, felt fine except for coughing and sneezing here and there so I continued to go to school, go to work, and go to the gym (my bad!). Then I start to feel worse, no appetite, lost my voice, ear began to hurt, and my eyes started to ooze green puss and swell up!!! Went to the doctor and luckily got some antibiotics and an eye cream to help alleviate the soreness.
The doctor did however ask if I had been wearing before the pus started and she said to get rid of the makeup that touched my eye.
For the last week I had been wearing:
-UB Primer Potion
- UB Naked palette
-Stila holiday paletter ( i picked up at Costco for 20$ btw!)
- Sephora hello kitty eyeliner
-Tarte mascara
- Rimmel Mascara
- LA colors eye liner
and used 3 different eye shadow brushes to apply my eyeshadows.
I realize that throwing away the mascara and eyeliner are obvious but what about the eye shadows? I just got the Naked palette and would be heart broken if I had to get rid of it! As for the brushes, can I just clean them, or do they have to be thrown away?

To be completely honest I only reckon the mascara is a must to throw
- eyeliner you can sharpen and disinfect.
Eye shadow brushes just give them a really good clean making sure to disinfect.
Eyeshaddows are unlikely to be a problem but to be safe I would disinfect them (There are tutorials online)
Primer potion is unlikely to be an issue at all. Unless you like covered the applicator in the puss!

haha See, I was fine the last time I wore eye makeup which was Wednesday, all the puss started yesterday afternoon! I just wasn't sure what I need to toss and what I could clean and Keep! Thank you so much for replying I nearly cried when I thought about what I needed to throw away!

anything that is liquid, and in a tube that the wand touched your eye, I would toss, but the eyeshadow pallets can be sanitized by spraying isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and letting it dry it will sanitize it and if the eyeliner was a pencil you can dip it in the alcohol and sharpen it.

I agree with Nikki. You probably should throw away mascara, but eyeshadows, pencil liners can be sanitized with alcohol.

You can also sanitize any brushes and sponges used. The mascaras and primer unfortunately are a loss IF you used the applicators that came with it. If you applied the primer to your finger before applying to your eye it might be safe.

That happened to me a few years ago. I just tossed the mascara and liquid eyeliners. I cleaned my brushes but kept the shadows even though the doc told me to toss it all.

There is this notion out there that makeup needs to be tossed all the time. I watched a makeup collection video once and people jumped all over the poor girl for having so much makeup saying she wasted her money because she can never use it all and the bacteria will make the makeup go bad SMH. 90% alcohol has been the professional standard for years. It kills bacteria. I use it on my mixing palettes, tweezers, scissors, lids, hands, chairs, pencils, shapeners, hair clips, etc. I try not to use it on my brushes since it can make the brushes brittle but you have brush sanitizer for that...or better yet wash your brushes with a bacteria killing soap. I also use beauty so clean spray on my shadows, blushes, lipsticks, powders etc to give those a good bacteria killing. I frown on anyone including doctors who will encourage a person to throw away thousands of dollars.
Give your mascara, primer, and liquid liner a toss. In the future aviod buying the primer with the wand or wipe the product off on the back of your hand and then work from there. Try cream or gel liners that require a brush and use disposable brushes for your mascara if it pains you to toss it (most mascara's need to be toss ever 9 weeks anyways so this should not be too hard)

@Angel M - On a different makeup forum we were talking about Beauty So Clean and someone pointed out the main ingredient in it is the same as vodka (ethyl alcohol). So it's just a waste of money (IMO) to buy Beauty So Clean when you can make one out of isoproyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) or ethyl alcohol (like vodka).
Ingredients for Beauty So Clean:
Ethyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Caprylic/Caprylic Trigylceride, Isopropyl Myristate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate
Ethyl Alcohol = grain alcohol
Isopropyl palmitate = palm oil
Caprylic/Caprylic Trigylceride = fractionated coconut oil
Isopropyl Myristate = used as a pesticide-free treatment against head lice. This ingredient may be derived from animals. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient.php?ingred06=703206
C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate = C12-15 alkyl benzoate is created from a reaction of Benzoic Acid and and C12-15 Alcohols. enzoic acid is a white crystalline acid found naturally in benzoin, cranberries, and coconut oil. Animal fat, vegetable oils and butters are all esters with the biggest difference being the melting point of the mixture of esters.

@LeeAnn You're welcome dahlin'. I knew a woman who threw away all of her bobbi brown makeup and chanel brushes at the advisement of her doctor because she had an eye infection brought on by her contacts. When I heard she did it I wanted to cry for her.
@Yasmin I've heard that somewhere about beauty so clean. I continue to buy and stock pile it anyway. It's easier for me to buy it then to have to figure out the percentage of one ingredient to add in comparison to the other ingredient. I was never a chemistry major lol. And I don't see it as being a major expense in comparison to attempting to mix it on my own.

@Angel and @Yasmin Kind of off topic, but related! In some major theater groups they spray down costumes with pure vodka because they can't wash them constantly! A little random tidbit ;)
As far as what to throw out, definitely anything you can't sanitize (i.e. mascara, primer potion if you touched your finger to the applicator or used the applicator itself, etc.) Sorry you have to deal with this, such a bummer!

Aww thank you! It has been a bummer and I still have a lingering cough to deal with =[ BUT thanks to everyone who replied I won't being throwing $$$ away!!!!! =]

We have always used 91% rubbing alcohol to sterilize... most bacteria live for only 2-8, up to a few days, whereas a viral is up to 8 weeks...I would sanitize and air dry, and if you want to be REALLY careful, wait out the 8 weeks :) then use again!
