Do you use a base coat before you paint them? If not them make sure you do if you wear polish. This will help keep the nails from turning yellow. Also if you dont have a nail buffer then you can get a cheap one from sallys. If you buff your nails it will help buff away some of the yellow. Other than that there's not much you can do until they grow out. I work in a nail salon and this is always what we tell everyone who asks the same thing.

Actually... there is something you can do about it. A hydrogen peroxide bath but that will depend on how badly stained your nails are.
In a hydrogen peroxide bath you will need a few items.
1. A nail brush.
2. Two nail bowls or dishes deep enough for your fingernails to be covered for a few minutes.
3. Hydrogen peroxide (antiseptic). DO NOT USE HAIR DEVELOPER. It typically is hydrogen peroxide but it's much stronger and can actually damage your skin and nails.
4. Warm water.
Mix a 1:1 ratio or water to hydrogen peroxide and pour into the 1st bowl. Dip nails, once nail polish has been removed and you've shaped your nails, into the bowl. Soak for one minute then with the nail brush gently scrub your nails. Be very careful in not scrubbing too hard otherwise you can damage not only your eponychium (the skin around your nails which people confuse as the cuticle) which may result in the skin tearing. Check your nails to see if the yellow has gone away if not dip your nail(s) into the hydrogen mix bath again for another minute. DO NOT ALLOW NAILS TO SOAK IN THE HYDROGEN-WATER MIX FOR MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES.
In the second bowl have clean warm water to rinse your nails of the hydrogen-water residue. Pat nails dry. From here you can either apply an oil to your nails or a clear base coat then proceed to paint your nails.
This should help if you have a light staining. If it's a darker stain you can try again several days later (I would say wait five days).

A girlfriend of mine says that she uses Denture Cleaner to whiten her nails because she has a bad habit of skimping on base coat. She just soaks them in warm water with the dissolved tablet for 10-20 mins.

10:1 bleach solution soak.
Make a bleach solution (10 parts water to 1 part bleach) soak your fingertips for a few minutes a day. This may make them brittle, but they certainly won't be yellow.

Bleach is too caustic to use on the skin. Hydrogen peroxide is not as caustic.

I only know that this works because I had to work with dilute bleach solutions every day , and my nails were never whiter. Straight bleach is too caustic, a 10:1 solution is fine for topical use. In fact, it is a medically recommended treatment for toenail fungus and athetes' foot.

I've read a vinegar with warm water soak will help.
And use a base coat when you wear polish.

yellow nails usually start from using self tanner and not using a base coat before applying it , the self tanner stains dry naked nails so always make sure to apply a base coat or a clear polish before applying tan! also you must use a base coat underneath polish! if you get a regular manicure once a week for 6 weeks , your nails will brighten up !
