I think research is a very good first step.
figure out what skintype you have, whether your undertone is warm, cool or neutral etc.
then try and search the internet for colors that could be a good match for you.
if you're not sure about something, it's best to buy something cheap and play with it until you figure what suits you best.
also, there are so many blog posts and youtube videos that talk about what products are a must when first buying makeup.
i think a good foundation, blush, mascara, a neutral eye palette and a versatile lipstick are a good place to start. then you can star adding products into your collection as you see fit :)

Oh How I agree with Branka! I would like to add that you might want take the opportunity to sit down and have a honest conversation with your Mom about her likes and dislikes about make up, her experiences with products...Maybe she would be willing to go shopping with you, let you use her products, watch you apply (good way to get pointers) and it creates a great opportunity to bond! Also another great step was to join this site.. there is a variety of women on here from Newbie to Expert and everything inbetween! I am so blessed to have come across this site! If you have any questions keep asking (feel free to ask me as well)
Enjoy the Adventures In Makeup!

I agree with all the ladies here and I would also add dont be afraid to experiment. It's only makeup and you can wash it off. : ) Also remember that while you're learning that not everything will turn out perfect but if you keep practicing you will get better. And also remember since you joined this site you now have a whole bunch of people to ask questions to. Happy experimenting!

You're getting some good advice here. I think it's important that you start with less expensive products. There are lots of videos here and on youtube that give suggestions for good quality, inexpensive products. start off with these and figure out what you like. When you form your own opinion about the different products then you can venture into the more expensive. Just keep in mind that practice makes perfect and you should never be afraid to experiment!
Happy shopping!!!
