Every time i go to get my hair cut, which is only like 2 times a year, I ask for the same thing. long layers, side swept bangs and I do not want any flat edges, making my hair choppy. But every time i have gotten a hair cut, my layers come out choppy looking and it's annoying. How do I get these women, who have been trained to cut hair, understad what i mean by NO FLAT edges...I asked for a razor cut to make them all blend together and yet she still managed to mess it up. What do I say exactly to get people to understand what I mean? I am tired of spending like $40 on my hair and it not turn out the way i want it to...

There is a problem in your consultation. They're probably doing the best they can but just aren't understanding. The best thing to do? Bring a picture. Works every time. Not to mention, you're the client. If you don't like it, tell her!

Hmm $40? If you're going to a Supercuts kind of place where the haircuts don't cost very much I wouldn't expect a lot either. The people working there might be "trained" but they're probably not going to have very good skills- otherwise they'd be working at a pricey salon! Sometimes you can get lucky and find someone who can actually cut hair well, but how many more bad haircuts are you willing to pay for to find him or her?
Why don't you try thinking of a friend who has great hair and asking them who they see? Referrals are the way to go, even if you have to ask a complete stranger (who happens to have fantastic hair). This way you're actually getting to see what the stylist is capable of- and who knows- maybe they won't be super expensive.
In my experience, I've found that I really get what I pay for. I tried to go the less expensive route too many times and actually ended up in tears after one Supercuts experience! So if you're just too shy to ask someone who they see try booking in a more upscale salon. You've already spent a ton of money on disappointing cuts... isn't it worth it to splurge on one great one??? Any good salon will be willing to work with you if you're not happy with your cut- like refund your money if you really hate it! Supercuts-ish places probably wouldn't do this. And besides, a great haircut looks good, even when it's growing out, so you're really saving more in the longrun!
Good luck!!

I think it really depends on finding the salon that works for you. I was having the worst hair cuts for years and It only started getting better when I went to a place were they had similar style as I do. Then you know for sure you are on the same page. It took me years to find the right salon

I have had great $12 haircuts from places like supercuts before and I have had great $70 haircuts. I will admit, some of the stylists working at the salons that charge $12 are so-so but its even more saddening when you spend more money and find someone who is even worse!
I have had the BEST haircuts and dye jobs from beauty school students for $10! It is somewhat of a risk because they are just learning how to do everything but at the same time they are also learning and have a good idea of what the latest trends are and more of an idea of what you want them to make your hair look like.
I used to go to one of my friends mom's for years because she did a great cut and dye for cheap but if I wanted anything different than long layers and bangs she didn't know how to style or cut it! I think finding a good stylist is a lot about finding someone who is on top of their game, someone who is continually learning and keeping up with trends, and takes your input of what you want into consideration and doesn't get mad if you ask them to fix your hair if its not how you want it.

This is why I started trimming my own hair! I would always walk out of a salon with a crappy cut!

April, ask for deep notching and texturizing. I go to a barbering college and that's what I do if people don't want the weight lines(flat edges). Make sure you're going somewhere where they will take their time and ask you questions.
LeeAnn- Thanks for the support in us students, haha.

same thing happened with me when i used to go to salons! i could never get exactly what i wanted. but i learned a few tips and tricks from my aunt on how to cut hair and now i do my own and always turns out looking good :) so if youre wanting something thats not that difficult you could always learn a technique on doing it yourself,
but if you dont think you could do what you want you could dind someone that has the haircut you want and ask them where they got it hehe :) hope i helped!
