practice makes perfect. practice different looks on your close friends, mom, sisters, cousin, aunts....etc. have your friends tell their friends so that can help you out by word by mouth. making some business cards can help tremendously. once people begin to hear more about your makeup service that's when you can think about charging. maybe do some deals. since halloween is coming up, do like a halloween makeup deals with your friends and so for.
as for makeup, make sure to have have a range of different colors for all skin types. you can get some makeup palettes which will allow you to have lots of colors to choose from. building a makeup kit takes time, so buy the things you need first, and then just gradually build from there.
goodluck! :)

Build your kit slowly. Don't invest so much money from the beg. The only thing you should really spend your money on is brushes. NEVER skimp on brushes. I find that my MAC pro discount helps me alot. It makes it really affordable. Get business cards, www.vistaprint.com always has good deals. Market yourself on craigslist, or facebook, through friends. Never under estimate the power of word of mouth marketing. Look into assisting other artists during shows or shoots. Make friends with photographers. They will also be a really good source of clients. Try partnering up with a photog and offering deals together. Make sure you look your best everywhere you go. Sometimes people will approach you and say "wow I really love your makeup" and you say "Thank you, here's my card, call me if you ever need someone." So basically, market yourself, develop your skill, don't expect to get paid big bucks for at least a year. Donate your services. Also most IMPORTANTLY, build a portfolio of your work. Not retouched images, but the actual makeup. Create a website at somepoint and it'll be much easier on yu to market yourself. Check mine out: www.karmicbeauty.us for ideas.

A great way to gain experience and knowledge without having to pay the high cost of makeup school was paying an already established artist for lessons. I did some research on established artist in my area, who were already working professionally with a competitive portfolio. Then, I contacted them for rates on private instruction to brush up on areas I needed help with. Model Mayhem is a great place to find artist in your area...just make sure they have the experience you are looking for.

I agree with everyone else on here as far as being knowlegdeable and building your makeup kit goes but I also think if you're passionate about makeup then you should start working for free. I personally put myself on craigslist as a freeelance makeup artist that would start off working for free and I posted some of my work and I already have a job as the makeup artist for a local semi pro basketball dance team and I also have 2 weddings booked. So I say go for it and good luck!!
