Hey guys!
I'm just going to get straight to it =)
To be a Make Up Artist... do you HAVE to be qualified?
Are there any people out there who are freelance, or are working for places like MAC and haven't got a certified qualification?
Basically is it possible to be a Make Up Artist and not have the qualification under your name?
Thank you! =)

I am freelance, I have a wedding booked for this summer and I have no schooling at all. I will be attending makeup school next year but I personally feel that it's your work that matters, not what education you have. I've talked to many girls at MAC and they all say it helps to have a background in makeup or art, but it's not a necessity you just need to have some experience doing makeup or in retail.

That's really good to know, i generally feel like that at a glance.. people will sift out the people that don't have the qualification and trust the ones that do?
Well eventually I will go to a school just for that extra cushioning and training!
thanks!

You don't need qualifications, just a fantastic portfolio to put your money where your mouth is. It's all about documented experience, but a certificate does not show me your makeup expertise. It just shows me you're booksmart. Document your portfolio well, and keep it updated. It should ALWAYS be a work in progress if you aim high towards your makeup/design career. =)

The only reason you would have needed to have gone to an accredited makeup school is if you wanted to get into a Film/Television/Stage union as a makeup artist.

No certification needed, but i believe when working in salons and places, without certification, you're not supposed to take stuff OFF peoples faces...you give them the wipes or whatever (atleast that what i understood from a guy speaking at the make up forever pro roadshow) i also read that if working in a salon setting, with no certification you can't use an eyelash curler on clients :P

Different states differents regulations. I.E. in New York makeup artist aren't licensed by the state but in Florida they are. There are loop holes to get around this but just check your state regulation to find out what you fall under. I recommend training though. Unless you want to work for a department store for the rest of you life making a little more than min. wage I say get some training. As a MUA and an Instructor I know you can not sustian on little wedding gigs here and there also most brides are savvy enough to ask for certification. Any film production is not hiring someone who is not in the union and the union requires training. Lastly, you can not get pro discounts without pro training. Building a kit with quality products take a lot of money. It helps to get 40-60% off of your makeup.
