What are the necessities you need to start doing free lance makeup? What are some tips to get you started?
Nov 9, 2010
Keshonta B.
business cards to network yourself, the key things is having the good brushes, variety of colors of eyeshadow..if your doing photo shoots sometimes the client may come with there own foundation which is a plus because it can get expensive buying different shades. eyelashes. and also prep yourself ahead of time ask if there is a certain theme and practice.

I totally agree with Keshonta. Being a Freelance Makeup Artist start to become very expensive as far as buying all of the necessities needed for a efficient makeup kit. Brushes, Primers, Numerous amounts of Eyeshadows, Lip colors, and much more are always needed.
You don't always have to have the expensive products in your makeup kit to feel like a successful Freelancer. Products like Revlon, H.I.P, and Maybelline are just as good as MAC, NYX, and NARS... you sometimes will have to use what you have and make it work.

ooooh thank you! I was wonder the same thing. How do you balance the budget in terms of personal vs pro makeup. Are there certain items that you can interchange between the two or do you absolutely separate! I have separate brushes and two of certain things like concealer palette, or eye/fae/lip primers, but what of everything else?
Nov 10, 2010
Brandi P.
Yea should i have a separate brushes for my kit and everything? I know I need to use the disposable wands and stuff to keep it sanitary. What about the eyeshadow palettes like off of coastal scents? I would think those are pretty good quality to use, they are very pigmented.

Brandi Coastal Scents have great colors and I really like their products. I also like BH cosmetics so check them out. I do have a seperate Brush set for personal and freelance use but until you get more $ saved up you can use brush sanitizers and shampoos that are anti bacterial (which you should be using anyway). Good Luck!

Yes, business cards are a must! are you trying to do makeup for a specific group (like brides, college students etc)?
Also, build your porfolio. This is so important. People most likely won't hire you without one. and look for an oppritunity wherever you can, whether that be with friends and family, looking for people on craigslist or networking with models. xoxo

Thank you guys so much this really helps.
Im trying to do it for like college students, proms, a night out, really anything that people need their makeup done for. A special occasion or anything. I am getting scholarship money for college right now and if i start a real job they will take some of my money away and I cannot really afford for that to happen. So I was thinking about starting my own little makeup thing on the side to earn some extra money. I guess getting started is just the hardest part.
Any tips on the foundation part? Should I buy a small variety of foundations or what?

wow great info here! i had the same questions!! I'n trying to do free lance myslef so that i can gain experience, for my future career! My main concern was foundation! I don't wanna spend a lot $$ of diffrent foundations! A friend of mine suggested I buy like 3 diffrent shades of maybe Revlon foundation and if i need to I can mix them to get the right color.

Yea that is what i was thinking of doing. Also with the powder foundations as well. What do you think is a reasonable price to start charging for doing people's makeup?
Nov 28, 2010
Kristina E.
I'm just starting school, and I was told to pick up three shades.. a light, medium and dark, all with different undertones.
I'd be interested in learning what people find to be a good starting price as well.

Brandi, are you planning on going to school for makeup? I'm going back and forth with the idea of going to beauty school for esthetics. I don't know what to do!

No I Dont Plan On Going To School For It. Ive heard youtubers say that they really didnt learn anything they didnt already know in them. I Want to take like a week class of a makeup training course in order to get a certificate though that is the only reason why i mite take one and those are not that expensive. In my opinion doing makeup is through experience n doing it so if you keep practicing and try new things that will be good enough and of course if you know what your doing lol

With training courses, don't you have to be a licensed pro? If you could send me some info on courses that would be great! (:
Dec 1, 2010
Tanecka L.
There is no legal "license" or legal certification to become an MUA. Training courses are always great for practice & to learn proper terms for certain things, they will give you basics. Myself personally I have decided to go to school for esthetics so I may give facials & skincare (to widen my range as an artist) Its only 8 or 9 months for esthetician. A great school for Makeup though is "MUD makeup designory school" http://www.mud.edu its world wide known & excellent for being trained in EVERY area of makeup design!

Yea I Have Read about a couple that are in los angleles i just typed in training courses on google. They are only about a week but you get a certificate of completion and some even offer a portfolio at the end of the class with a photoshoot. it just depends on how much you want to pay. The certificates are good to have to start getting discounts on your makeup purchases
Dec 1, 2010
Veronika J.
Oh okay, I didn't know you can get discounts with just certificates!!
Dec 2, 2010
Brandi P.
Yea Well Most Places Require you have two different kinds of proof that you are a makeup artist but i know a certificate is one of them!
Dec 2, 2010
Ashley C.
i have many friend with a liscence and they get ALL the discounts! plus they make more money having that state license than just a certification which is what i only have so i am going to school. when you only have a certification some companies require more because there are school that make it so easy to get it.
ive seen very Untalented youtube gurus with a mac pro card and all they did was take a 40 hour makeup course and you can tell by there skills and applications they learned nothing! so sad! they should have the option to get a pro card at all!
I think its all about the research too, which it sounds like you have! good for you!
